We stayed in lovely hotels. In Chiang Mai we stayed in the Bodhi Serene, where there was live music nightly (a singer–guitarist whose repertoire seemed to consist mainly of 'Wonderful Tonight' – but did sound good nevertheless) and a fountain in the courtyard. The bath was round, four feet in diameter, and the bed was about seven feet wide.

In Ko Samui our resort, the Tongsai Bay, had its own private beach and our room was huge despite being the cheapest (or rather the least expensive) in the place! Here the bathtub was a large oblong tank, and the fruit bowl was perpetually full...
