What’s happened to tangerines?

When I was small it was always tangerines. Now you can get clemetines, satsumas, mandarins and minneolas (but mostly clementines), but not a tangerine in sight. The last time I saw a tangerine was in the speciality section of a Sainsbury’s in Glasgow at a horrendous price. I bought some anyway, and they were definitely different from all the other citrus fruits listed above.

So does anyone know why they have disappeared? Was there some great tangerine plague that I missed, along the lines of Dutch Elm Disease or the thing that people are fretting will kill off all our bananas? Or were they just renamed ‘easy-peel citrus’ or something?
