I killed a blackbird

On my way into work, I saw a blackbird flopped at the edge of the pavement. It didn’t move at all as I approached it, or even when I picked it up. It had its beak wide open and appeared to be gasping for breath. I thought it might have been hit by a car and paralysed. So I wrung its neck.

I was thinking in terms of putting it out of its misery. Now I’m wondering whether that was the right thing to do. Should I have left it? Maybe it was just stunned or something and would have got better in a couple of minutes or hours. And I’m worried by how quickly I came to the decision to kill it. It’s no good agonising after the deed is done.
